NPI and taxonomy, in two minutes
An NPI is a 10-digit number that identifies a health care provider in every HIPAA transaction. Individuals get a Type 1 NPI; organizations — practices, hospitals, pharmacies — get Type 2. The number never changes and carries no information about the provider; its last digit is a check digit, which the lookup above verifies as you type.
A taxonomy code says what kind of provider the NPI belongs to. It is the 10-character code from the NUCC Health Care Provider Taxonomy, picked when the NPI is applied for and reported on claims. Each code sits in a three-level tree — grouping, classification, and sometimes a specialization — and many map to a Medicare specialty through CMS's crosswalk, which is what decides how Medicare enrolls and pays the provider. 456 of the 883 codes have a Medicare crosswalk entry.
